Sahra Turn - All About Arms

January 2020 Move of the Month Club: Sahra Turn

Week 3: All About Arms
In this annotated study, we'll examine the arm positions and pathways in the Sahra Turn. This video begins by isolating the arms before adding in the turns. Then, we'll look at the Sahra Turn arms from different angles to get a better perspective on specific details. Finally, we'll go over common mistakes and review proper technique.

Four common mistakes, one for each section of the Sahra Turn:
(1) Cue - Common Mistake: Sweeping the arms out to the sides.
Correction: Keep the hands close to the body, drawing a diagonal line from overhead down to the left hip.

(2) 1st Turn - Common Mistake: Swinging the right arm out to the side.
Correction: Bring the right hand up and overhead rather than out to the side. Avoid using the momentum of swinging your arm to wheel yourself around. (Be aware that this exaggerated movement is often matched with a wide foot swing as well.)

(3) Arm transition - Common Mistake: Dropping the elbow as the right hand comes down to the right hip.
Correction: Even though the elbow is leading, the elbow should still remain lifted. Avoid flipping the palm up toward the ceiling, which makes it difficult to keep the elbow properly rotated.

(4) Finish - Common Mistake: Blocking the face with the floreos.
Correction: Sweep the right arm past the face before executing the two floreos.

In general, try to think of the Sahra Turn as a narrow, vertical movement to avoid the tendency to go wide with the arms or feet.
