Handmade brick production for restoration of ancient and historic buildings.
Hand-made bricks are produced at a high rate by thrusting clay into a wooden frame on a metal baseplate. The worker is paid peace-rate, ie paid by the number of bricks produced. All stages of the process are by hand in a traditional fashion little changed since Roman times. The clay and material used can be adjusted to produce bricks that match a particular building, so allowing resoration to preserve the appearance. These bricks are used by English Heritage and the National Trust.
