𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

I start this episode exploring the Central Train Station of Milan. It's a true architectural marvel, even if its original purpose was to reflect the might and dominance of a fascist regime.

But there is another, much more modern architectural gem very close by - the Porta Nuova, a very central quarter of Milan nestled between train stations and historic neighbourhoods. It is the most modern neighborhood in the city, perfectly representing the character of Milan as a ‘born-again-city’.

After industrial production began to uproot and move away in the 1990s, whole areas of the city were redesigned. 20 years later, the complex development projects are starting to pay off. The Porta Nuova has become one of the main business districts of Milan, in terms of economy, and Europe's richest district within any city.

The heart of the Porta Nuova district is the BAM, a public park covering approximately 10 hectares, including a dozen circular forests each dedicated to a plant species, a labyrinth and flower beds of perennial plants.

Meanwhile, the district's main nucleus is the Piazza Gae Aulenti, elevated 6 meters above the street. It is dominated by the 231-meters tall Unicredit Tower, which is currently the highest skyscraper in Italy.

Another of the highlights is The Vertical Forest, a pair of towers with 8,900 square metres of terraces covered in 2,000 species of plants including more than 900 trees!
