February Flood 2019
Drone footage and stills showing Burke River water systems during floods in early February 2019
Thanks and credit to Harin Karra and Claire Britton for a couple of the stills
Boulia Outback Queensland
This flood on the Burke System reached 4.1m at the bridge near the town of Boulia. It goes over the bridge at 4.9m. (Correction:I say 4.8m in this video, the height the river reached this flood, it did only get up to 4.1m)
The 9Mile runs first and the 5Mile will run if the Burke River stays up for 12-24hours at 3.6m.
Depending on how long the Burke and Sandy stay at that height or higher will be the gauge of how far the 5mile and other smaller unnamed channels will run for.
The 9Mile and 5Mile are basically that milage east of Boulia on the Kennedy Development Road.
The Goodwood Swamp on the same road is 4.5km east of Boulia.
4km south of the Goodwood Swamp, from the road, is the Goodwood house.
When Goodwood recorded its first rain 1 February 2019 of 36mm the Burke System was at 3.2m from rain further north. The Goodwood swamp was filling up the Goodwood Lagoon at the house.
(Correction: I say we received 24 or 25mm on the 1 February in the footage but indeed we did record 36mm on the 1 February at Goodwood)
While we received a total of 56mm (a beautiful start to our wet season) and a good flood, properties and communities 200km north of us, north of the Selwyn Range were dealing with one of the biggest floods in living memory. The devastation was enormous.
Yet 200km south of us and even closed had not received a drop of rain.
Posting this on the 22 February Bedourie and Birdsville were just receiving the waters from the Burke, Georgina, Hamilton, Diamantina Systems. For people that have yet to receive rain this water would be life-giving and so good for their souls,
The head of our Burke System is also the head of the Hamilton and Diamantina system, which received 12inches 300mm. As well as the rain recorded along the systems.
The Diamantina River on the Kennedy Developmental Road, Boulia to Winton, stayed at over 3m for several days.
The Wokingham Creek the eastern side of the Diamantina River, recorded a very big flood.
Properties around Winton also were dealing with too much rain and many stock losses from flooding and cold relentless winds.
