24 in 42 with Jason Ray Carney

Welcome to '24 in 42' - The answers to life, the universe, and everything about an author through 24 questions in 42 minutes.

Jason Ray Carney (pronounced KAAR·nee) has to use the "Ray" to distinguish himself from another writer named Jason Carney, who is NOT a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. In addition to being that professor, Jason Ray is a scholar, author, and editor, and has published reviews for the Los Angeles Review of Books. He's also been an interesting conversationalist it's been my pleasure to sit with at the annual Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas.

Beyond the University you'll find Jason Ray at https://spiraltower.blogspot.com and on https://x.com/jrcarney52 or https://www.facebook.com/jrcarney or https://bsky.app/profile/jrcarney52.bsky.social. He is also the co-editor of THE DARK MAN: JOURNAL OF ROBERT E. HOWARD AND PULP STUDIES at https://www.thedarkmanjournal.org and the Academic Outreach Coordinator for The Robert E. Howard Foundation https://rehfoundation.org

Check out Jason's newest publication, the collection THE BOOK OF THE ROGUE at https://spiraltowerpress.blogspot.com/2024/06/the-book-of-rogue-sword-and-sorcery.html. The publication he is most proud of to date is his currently out-of-print collection RAKEFIRE AND OTHER STORIES https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54664094.Rakefire_and_Other_Stories. And the most difficult thing he's ever written is "Lift" at the BLUE LAKE REVIEW https://bluelakereview.weebly.com/lift.html - but you should really hear him talk about it before you read it.

Like all scholars, Jason had lots to share, including this second quote he enjoys: "Habitualization devours work, clothes, furniture, one's wife, and the fear of war. If the whole complex lives of many people go on unconsciously, then such lives are as if they had never been. And art exists that one may recover the sensation of life; it exists to make one feel things, to make the stone stony. The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived and not as they are known. The technique of art is to make objects 'unfamiliar,' to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. Art is a way of experiencing the artfulness of an object: the object is not important." - Viktor Shlovsky, ART AS TECHNIQUE (1917). You'll have to watch the interview to learn his favorite quote.

Listen in as Jason shares aspects of his writing and personal lives. You'll want to hear about the 3 Cs of his work: Something really cold, something hot and current, and something sweet coming - they're pretty awesome! I'm not kidding either - Jason shares a memorable closing.
