Border dispute sparks protest by Lapangap villagers in city
Residents of Lapangap village along the Meghalaya-Assam border on Wednesday staged a protest in Shillong over the unresolved boundary dispute and alleged harassment faced by villagers from the Karbi Anglong side of Assam.
Accompanied by members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) from the Nartiang Circle and the West Jaintia Hills District Unit, the protesters gathered at Barik Point before marching towards the Main Secretariat. During the protest, the group pushed through police personnel and reached outside the Main Secretariat gate.
The villagers said they were frustrated with repeated government assurances to resolve the border dispute, alleging that no concrete action has been taken while residents continue to face difficulties and insecurity in the area.
The protesters alleged that recurring tensions along the border have disrupted farming activities and created fear among villagers who depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
The delegation demanded measures to ensure farmers can safely access their fields, removal of the Assam Police camp at Lum Pynthror, correction of GPS boundary markings on Google Maps, and permanent security protection for farmers in the area.
