Discovering Gubbio, Italy's 'City of Madmen'
Discover Gubbio with me, baptized by the Italians as “la citta dei matti” - and find out if they are truly “mad."
After a stop at Gubbio’s 1st-c. B.C. Roman theater, we’ll cross centuries, stopping to pay our respects at the Mausoleum of the 40 Martyrs. Not far away, a visit to a medieval church confirms that not just a wolf inextricably links St. Francis of Assisi to Gubbio.
While visiting an artisan friend we’ll learn about another saint dear to the eugubini. Learn how Gubbio’s festival celebrating their saint links to the fascinating pre-Roman religious rituals of the ancient Umbri people.
Roman and medieval artifacts await us in Gubbio’s Civic Museum inside the majestic Palazzo dei Consoli. The Campanone ("Great Bell”), inspires intense emotion for everyone in Gubbio when 12 campanari (bell-ringers) perform jointly the ritual activating the tolling.
💚 Since my guide work here in Umbria is suspended due to global travel restrictions, I'm offering my Virtual Experiences and I very much appreciate gratuities (optional) in these tenuous times. A donation may be made at
