Making 141 Picture Frames

I have been working on a massive project, and it’s finally finished!

For the last 2 years I have been watercolor painting all 141 mammals in Washington State. This month I built frames for every one of them. I milled the frames from maple 1x6's and cut them to size with my miter sled. I glued the pieces up using blue painters tape, and wood glue. To reenforce the joint I nailed the corners with 23 ga. nails, and then it was time for Sanding.

Sanding took me more than 2 weeks on its own. I started with 120 grit, and moved to 220 grit after applying wood filler. I then applied the first coat of polyurethane, and let them dry on dowel racks. After 24hrs I sanded the frames to 320, and applied a second coat.

My friends at Gallery Frames supplied me with precut plexiglas and acid free foam-core. I built a centering jig for the paintings, and started adhering them to the backer. I used removable acid free tape to hold the paintings down and then placed them in the frames along with the plexiglas.

The paintings were held into place using a point shooter, and adhesive hangers were applied to the back. (Link to all the materials bellow)
