In the Huam-dong area, Korean residential areas were formed around the waterways of Japanese colonial era, and many "cultural houses" meaning high-end Western-style houses were built in the residential areas developed in earnest since the 1920s. As many influential people such as politicians, bureaucrats, and financiers lived in this cultural house, the Huam-dong area has become a luxury residence for representative Japanese people in Japanese colonial era.

The liberation changed the character of Huam-dong again. As the Japanese who lost the war withdrew from the land, the area of Huam-dong became a Korean residential area again, but the physical environment of the Korean residential area in Huam-dong was completely different from that of the Joseon Dynasty.
