The US-Philippines Military Partnership Ready to Counter China in the Indo-Pacific!
The United States and the Philippines have significantly reinforced their military partnership in response to China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the South China Sea. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent visit to Manila underscored Washington’s unwavering commitment to Philippine security, announcing expanded defense cooperation, increased military aid, and greater operational access for U.S. forces under an enhanced Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). Trilateral maritime drills with Japan and the Philippines, alongside joint Special Forces exercises in Batanes near Taiwan, highlight the region's rising strategic stakes. The U.S. has pledged between $500 million and $670 million to modernize the Philippine military, providing advanced defense systems such as anti-ship missiles, surveillance drones, and mobile rocket platforms to counter China’s expanding naval presence. Intelligence-sharing agreements, including the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), and joint cybersecurity initiatives further solidify this alliance. With the Philippines at the heart of territorial disputes, China’s continued militarization of the South China Sea—including the harassment of Philippine vessels and the construction of fortified artificial islands—has intensified tensions. Despite a 2016 tribunal ruling rejecting China’s sweeping claims, Beijing has remained defiant, prompting the U.S. to reaffirm its commitment under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty, with President Biden warning that any attack on Philippine forces in the South China Sea would invoke U.S. intervention. Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOPS) in contested waters, coupled with the deployment of high-tech weaponry and increased military drills, signal a clear U.S. commitment to deterring Chinese expansionism. While Washington insists its actions are defensive, Beijing accuses the U.S. of exacerbating tensions, warning Manila against deepening its military alignment with America.
