Opening Video Montages Collection on LNwDL, 1982-93 Upgrade
The complete (I hope for real this time) collection of the different video montages and music themes that opened Late Night.
Montage #1: February 1982 to February 1987 - Dark skyline, then street views as the lights in NYC turn off save one window in Rockefeller Center.
a. February 2, 1982: The first show that opened with the video montage and music theme. With the original band personnel: Paul Shaffer, Hiram Bullock, Will Lee, Steve Jordan.
b. January 6, 1987: With the new permanent band members: Paul, Sid McGinnis, Will, Anton Fig.
c. February 27, 1985: The "morning show," with the montage hitting the same sights as before but in the morning daylight.
d. June 4, 1982: The DAVE special, with vocalist Harve Mann.*
e. November 15, 1983: Custom-Made Show #1.*
f. March 27, 1984: Custom-Made Show #2.*
g1. May 13, 1985: The week in Los Angeles; changing L.A. landmarks without the spinning postcards.
g2. May 16, 1985: In L.A.; the montage with one city landscape video underneath spinning postcards.
h. August 29, 1985: Summertime Sunshine Happy Hour.*
i. October 26, 1985: The Tri-State Area special.
j. November 20, 1985: Too Tired to Do a Show show in the Late Night offices.*
k. November 26, 1985: Tthe Tokyo show.
l. November 30, 1985: The first Film Festival.
m. February 11, 1986: Harmon Killebrew Night. Killebrew had been bumped from the first Film Festival, so he was given an entire show 2 1/2 months later.*
n. November 28, 1986: The second Film Festival.
o. February 1, 1986: The 4th Anniversary on a TWA 747.*
p. February 25, 1986: Parents' Night in the Late Night offices.*
Montage #2: February 1987 to February 1990 - There were two openings that alternated each night, followed by flights through an office, an apartment, the Old Town Bar, and a parking garage.
a. March 24, 1987: The montage opens at dusk, the camera heading towards and inside the World Trade Center. Inside the apartment: no dog.
b. August 28, 1987: The montage opens at night over the city. Inside the apartment: dog.
c. May 20, 1987: The week in Las Vegas.
d. November 19, 1987: The Milford Plaza Hotel show.*
e. February 4, 1988: The 6th Anniversary Special at Radio City Music Hall.
f. October 21, 1988: The airport show at JFK International Airport.
g. February 2, 1989: The 7th Anniversary Special.
h. May 4, 1989: The week in Chicago.
i. February 1, 1990: The 8th Anniversary Special at Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.
j. June 29, 1990: The animated opening montage created by then-17-year-old fan David Gottlieb.*
Montage #3: February 1990 to May 1992 - Through a restaurant kitchen, manhole workers, fish market, then alternating footage.
a. September 11, 1990: Inside a resident hotel lobby.
b. April 26, 1990: Addition of workers warming themselves around a fire-contained metal bin; then the resident hotel lobby replaced by a movie theater lobby.*
Montage #4: June 1992 to January 1993 - The space videos.
a. February 6, 1992: The 10th Anniversary at Radio City Music Hall. All elements of the space videos that debuted in June were prologued here, though rendered differently: the asteroids, satellite, U.S. skylab, high-atmosphere balloon, geese, and helicopter. Meanwhile, the regular shows continued to air Montage #3a and b for another four months.
b. July 17, 1992: Space, Version 1: Asteroids, Volkswagon, high-atmosphere balloon, four jets, and a Japanese Kite that translates to "Late Night." This version and the next would alternate, starting in early June.
c. November 26, 1992: Space, Version 2: With the Late Night satellite, Spacesuit Dave, Soviet skylab, geese flying in a "W" formation (for Worldwide Pants), and a blimp whose rudder is marked "LN-693," the scheduled last month of Late Night.
d. December 8, 1992: Space, Version 3: Soviet skylab from a different perspective, U.S. skylab, satellite, propeller plane, and NYPD helicopter. This version began alternating with Versions 1 and 2 in late June.
Montage #5: February to June 1993: The space videos.
Space Versions 1, 2, and 3 continued alternating per show, but by February 1993, Paul had added a note a full second higher to the opening root. And Version 1 replaced the Japanese lettering on the kite.
a. May 18, 1993: Space Version 1: The Japanese letters on the kite that had earlier translated to "Late Night" had been replaced with Japanese letters that translated to "G.E. Sucks" (and thanks again to Joad Breslin for setting me straight on that).
What follows is a comparison between the earlier and later kites.
b. March 23, 1993: Space Version 2. Same as earlier Version 2 but with the added note in the beginning. I just wanted to end this with Spacesuit Dave again.
* Added segments from previous upload.
