Hi-Target HTS-820 Line Stakeout Tutorial | Set Out Chainages Along a Line
Accurate line stakeout is essential when you need to transfer design lines from your survey data onto the ground.
In this training video, we're going to walk you through how to perform a line stakeout using the Hi-Target HTS-820 Total Station, including how to define a line from two points, set chainage increments, and stake out positions along that line.
This workflow is useful for surveyors, construction teams and engineers who need to set out roads, boundaries, trenches, pipelines, building lines or any linear feature on site.
This video explains:
◼️How to access the line stakeout function on the HTS-820
◼️How to create a new line in the line library
◼️How to define a line using two known points
◼️How to set the start station / starting chainage
◼️How to set chainage increments along the line
◼️How to move from one chainage point to the next
◼️How to read the left, right, forward and backward indications
◼️How to accurately stake out points at set distances along a line
00:00 Intro
00:08 Opening the Survey menu
00:15 Selecting Line Stakeout
00:19 Adding a new line
00:24 Choosing the line type
00:29 Defining the line using two points
00:33 Naming the line
00:39 Selecting start and end points
00:58 Setting the start station
01:10 Selecting the line for stakeout
01:17 Setting chainage increments
01:28 Setting a 2 m chainage step
01:39 Moving to the next chainage
01:58 Reading the stakeout indication
02:09 Staking out the 2 m position
02:17 Moving another 2 m along the line
02:31 Adjusting left/right and forward/backward
02:51 Staking out the 4 m position
02:56 Final workflow summary
Line stakeout helps reduce field errors by allowing you to follow a defined alignment and place points at controlled intervals. Instead of guessing positions along a line, the HTS-820 guides you step by step using clear directional instructions.
At SOM Survey Instruments, we help surveyors and construction professionals across South Africa and Africa use practical, cost-effective surveying technology with confidence.
We don’t just supply the instrument.
We help you understand the workflow behind accurate site work.
