The Carrington Event of 1859: The Solar Storm That Shook the World

On September 1, 1859, a massive geomagnetic storm hit Earth. The night sky over Europe glowed so brightly that people in London and Paris could read newspapers without lamps, and telegraph systems around the world began behaving strangely. Some telegraph machines even kept sending messages after the batteries were disconnected.

The Carrington Event showed that the Sun can strike civilization in a way that makes technology seem alive. If a storm like that happened today, our power grids and communications could fail in minutes.
