Globalization: Past, Present, Future by Jeffrey R. Frieden

The Andrew F. Smith Lecture in International Economics and Development

Andrew F. Smith was born in Washington, D.C., on June 16, 1963, the second son of Dr. David Smith and Mrs. Alice Gillen. He grew up in Pennington, N.J., and came to Syracuse University in 1981, where he studied economics at the Maxwell School. At Syracuse, Andrew was a member of ROTC and the men’s swim team, elected as captain in his senior year.

After graduating from Syracuse in 1985, Andy worked at Chubb Insurance Corporation. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma a few years later and, with the support of his family and his many friends, fought a courageous battle against the disease. Andy died on New Year’s Day 1991.

Shortly after Andy’s death, his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Michael and Chris Khouri Smith, established the Andrew Smith Swimming Scholarship at Syracuse University. The fund was used until 2006 to provide scholarship and financial support to student-athletes on the men’s swim team. When the University discontinued the swimming program in 2007, the family decided to transfer the fund to the Economics Department of the Maxwell School, to support a lecture series in Andy’s name.

We are honored to present the third Andrew F. Smith Lecture in International Economics and Development, and would like to thank Andy’s family for choosing to honor him through this gift to the Maxwell School Economics Department.
