The Man Who Almost Caught Jack The Ripper Red Handed.

In this video we take a close look at the first killing on the 30th of September, 1888 - the night of the double murder, but also the occasion when Jack the Ripper was almost caught.

At 1am that morning, the body of Elizabeth Stride was found in Dutfield's Yard, off Berner Street, by Louis Diemschutz, the steward of the International Workingman's Educational Association, which was located at 40, Berner Street, alongside the club building.

Diemschutz had spent the day of the 29th of September selling cheap jewellery near Crystal Palace. He returned to Berner Street at 1am on the morning of Sunday, 30th September, and turned his pony and barrow into Dutfield's Yard.

As he did so, his pony reacted to something on the ground, and, going to investigate it, Diemschutz discovered the body of Jack the Ripper's third victim. Elizabeth Stride.

The probability is that he had interrupted the killer, who was probably still in the yard at that time. Had Diemschutz raised the alarm, the murderer would have been taken. But Diemschutz went into the club, for reasons explained in the video, and thus Jack the Ripper was able to make good his escape.
