My own Weird Wagonload of Funky Retro Mobile Phones
This is only a part of my mobile phone collection but it consists of used phones for the most part and "Dummy Phones" that resellers used to display phones without the theft risk. Real dummies would however sometimes steal my "dummy display phones" and try to use them.
I started to collect this in 1998 in order to preserve the "actual Icelandic usage history" and it soon became clear that this would be something that people would love to see in future. I tried to display this in my mobile phone retail store but it was impossible, i had to listen to stories all day from people who had used some of the models, and customers almost forgot what they came to buy. This was just too much fun for them.
I collected phones until 2018 when i left the market for good, it was no longer room for the little service friendly shopkeeper on this market and this is a part of my legacy after 25 yrs in competition with much larger companies. What made me hang around for so long time was always good products knowledge that made me able to scan out the models that brought me returning customers and minimum need for repairs and such.
I was also designing and producing mobile phone accessories from Icelandic leather and the design took into account stories and wishes from customers, and the wishes of my customers then became products in Poland, then gradually I made the company independent from mobile phone sales, which was always a very difficult market.
But what I couldn't handle at the end was the housing market, I had invested a lot in product development and stock so when i had to move my store from its "birthplace" after the building was sold, i didn't have the resources to take more loss since it had been so costly to develop my firm away from phone sales. I was always proud of my service history and I still own my store's market name, although I don't see my self open it again. I lost more than a wagonload of money and pride, however, when one door closes, we know what happens.
I shot those photos just a while ago when the Akureyri Museum asked to have them for some time to display them, I said yes with one condition, I needed high-res photos of some of the 350 phones since I'm going to sell this bunch when the museum display will be over and done with.
This belongs in another museum, or in a bar, or somewhere where people can share memories about this funny bunch of designs. It is my wish to sell this in Iceland, but if it's not going to work, I will export this since I don't have free storage space for this. So if someone says, I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse, I most likely won't.
However, I hope this collection brought you some memories and a smile, it's always been good for that. I would love to see this in a bar, it would be a hit display from day one.
Here is a old video i made a while back, not the best sound quality but it's the mobile history of Iceland in details with way more pictures of the collection: https://youtu.be/Uu6xTlBQE3s
