Diva has a Cow
One of our old faithful spots is finally active again so we have been hitting it after every good rain lately. This spot always produces small teeth but when the layer first hits the ground there are decent size ones to be found including makos, great whites, and sometimes even megalodon teeth. But the real reason this spot is special is because it has a formation not found anywhere else. On top there is sand, just like everywhere in the South Carolina Lowcountry, and under that is a laminated clay layer called the Penholoway formation. Its about 4 to 6 feet thick in this spot and it has nothing in it normally so we call it the Penholoworthless. But under that there is a pleistocene marine deposit with teeth as flawless as anywhere, and thats on top of the lag deposit where the big teeth are. The pleistocene layer loaded with fish fossils, but what eats fish? Sharks! There are razor sharp bull shark teeth and huge modern tiger shark teeth that fed on the fish. The super stars of this spot are the cow shark teeth, found almost nowhere else for a hundred miles in any direction. The are rare as can be and I have found a handful of them out here, but today was Diva's day in the spotlight when she found her first. It was just laying on top of a pile plain as day, so obvious that she thought I put it there! HA! Not likely! When was the last time I walked past a tooth willingly, especially something as rare as a cow shark tooth! Congratulations Diva you suffered through finding punies and watching me kill it out there long enough, the universe finally rewarded you!
