Iran Admits Weaknesses in 12-Day Conflict With Israel

An Iranian official has acknowledged that the recent 12-day war with Israel exposed significant vulnerabilities in the country’s defense systems.

“As someone familiar with the efforts of the armed forces, I inform the Iranian people that strengthening our national defense is being pursued urgently and seriously. From the valuable lessons of the 12-day conflict, many weaknesses have been identified and addressed,” Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said on August 26, admitting to shortcomings in Iran’s defensive capabilities.

He added: “By building on our existing strengths, our armed forces are now prepared to respond more forcefully than ever against any attack on our beloved country, ensuring that the enemy neither miscalculates nor dares to strike Iran again.”

Qalibaf warned that “in any future war, restraint will end, and new areas and targets will be designated for retaliation.”

This rare admission contrasts with Tehran’s frequent claims of possessing “impenetrable” defenses. In June, when Israel launched airstrikes, Iran’s defense systems failed to intercept them effectively, though Tehran did inflict damage on Israel with missile strikes. The renewed commitment to strengthen defenses suggests Iran is recalibrating its military posture toward Israel.

Qalibaf stressed that improving defense capabilities is now an urgent priority. “If the enemy provokes us, the conflict could expand into new areas, as well as into the economic and political spheres,” he said.

His remarks coincided with Iran’s navy conducting large-scale drills dubbed Enduring Authority, which included the launch of cruise missiles in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean against maritime targets.
