Leopold's Maneuvers | Obstetric Grips | Abdominal Palpation | Nursing Lecture
Leopold's Maneuvers or the Obstetric Grips are the movements or the actions performed by an examiner in the abdominal palpation of a gravid mother after 28 weeks of gestation.
This name is given on the name of Christian Gerhard Leopold a German gynecologist.
Prerequisite is-
- Empty her bladder
- Stand on the right side of a patient
- Make patient lie in dorsal position with knees flexed
- Rub hand before going to touch mother's abdomen
There are 4 Leopold's Maneuvers or the Obstetric Grips-
1. 1st Leopold's Maneuver / Fundal Grip -
- Use both hands.
- Facing the face toward the patient's face.
- Place the palmer aspect of hands on the fundus.
- Locate which pole of the fetus is there. Ex. Cephalic, Podalic
2. 2nd Leopold's Maneuver / Lateral or Umbilical Grip -
- Use both hands.
- Facing the face toward the patient's face.
- Palpate the lateral aspect of the umbilicus, keeping one hand steady, and using the another hand to palpate, repeat the process on both sides.
- Locate the Back, Limbs, and anterior shoulder.
3. 3rd Leopold's Maneuver / Pawlik's Grip / 2nd Pelvic Grip -
- Use one hand only.
- Facing the face toward the patient's face.
- Palpate by keeping the ulnar border of the right hand at the symphysis pubis and grasp the presentation.
-Identify the presentation, descent, and engagement.
4. 4th Leopold's Maneuver / 1st Pelvic Grip -
- Use both hands.
- Facing the face toward the patient's feet.
- Palpate the presentation, presenting part, engagement, and attitude by using both hands
