Forever Young: AKB48 and the J-Pop Idol Industry

This is an archival documentary I made for class, so I decided to share it on here too lol. It’s kind of funny that I made this as I’m actually a fan of AKB48’s music, and yet there’s this extremely toxic side of the industry. I think it’s important to see the conditions these girls are faced with to want to pursue idoling, something that often comes across as glamorous, but is very damaging to how a girl will shape her perspective of herself and the world.

Obviously, all this footage is from music videos, videos on YouTube, and other documentaries, so I don’t own any of it and it’s all for documentary purposes. But there’s a lot of great people who did coverage on the topic, and in turn, helped me make a hopefully interesting film

I want to share more of my film school work in the future! Thank you for watching if you did. I realized that I really enjoy making video essays, though they’re definitely challenging to make.
