Car Cabin Sneeze Simulation | Examining Potential Spread of COVID 19 in an Air-Conditioned Vehicle
When a person sneezes, particles containing mucus and saliva eject from their nose and mouth. While few particles may be contaminated with a virus or bacteria, sneezes can be infectious to those in close proximity. Depending on the sneeze force and turbulence, particle size can range from a fine mist (aerosols) to large spray drops and can hover in surroundings from a few seconds to several minutes.
When examining a sneeze in closed car cabin with airflow from a typical air-conditioning HVAC system, sneeze particles are easily transmitted to the nearby occupants — quickly. Depending on the airflow direction and speed, particles will travel and hover inside the cabin before eventually falling to the vehicle floor. While obviously not all the particles ejected from a sneeze are contagious, it is likely that some carrying a virus or bacteria could reach a neighboring occupant. Similar phenomenon can be seen in airplane cabins, offices, or even outside.
Airflow and direction play a big role in particle distribution and therefore state-of-the-art turbulent models and particle tracking capabilities, like those found in Dassault Systemes CFD/Fluids tools, are required for accurate simulation.
