Caucasus Calamity For Germany: How the Oil Rush Turned Into an Urgent Scramble to Survive

At the end of June 1942, German panzers moved across southern Russia with such speed that there wasn't enough time to organize a retreat. In two weeks, the 1st Panzer Army led by General Ewald von Kleist traveled more than 480 kilometers.

Rostov was captured, the steppe stretched out ahead, and right in front of them there was the most coveted land of the whole Second World War. The oil fields of the Caucasus that produced up to 80 percent of Soviet fuel supply. Germany was so convinced of its success that it sent 15,000 oil workers alongside the tanks.

Six months later, the very same soldiers would have to cover 630 kilometers in the opposite direction, trying to escape the tightening Soviet ring and prevent another disaster comparable with Stalingrad.

So in this episode, we'll learn about the entire operation Edelweiss – the longest tank assault in 1942 that ran out of gas trying to capture the oil fields and how Germany managed to burn down the oil before taking control of it, causing another catastrophe for them.
