𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘: Temporary Pedestrian Span Rises at Santa Monica Pier
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Tuesday, May 12, 2026 — A major phase of the Santa Monica Pier Bridge Replacement Project advanced Tuesday as overnight crane operations placed more than half of the steel trusses for the temporary pedestrian bridge now taking shape alongside the existing pier bridge.
Workers with Shimmick Construction Company spent Monday night into early Tuesday lifting and installing multiple steel truss sections between the pier deck and Appian Way, forming the structural framework of the temporary pedestrian bridge that will maintain public access during demolition and reconstruction of the original 1939 bridge.
According to project notices, crews installed the first series of trusses overnight using a large crane staged near the pier approach. Additional truss sections are scheduled for installation Tuesday night, with the remaining bridge spans expected to be set into place during continued overnight work.
During daytime operations Tuesday, crews were observed working on handrails and floor decking for the new pedestrian bridge while crane operators repositioned heavy equipment toward Moomat Ahiko Way in preparation for the next round of nighttime lifts.
To accommodate the crane setup for Tuesday night’s installation, Shimmick crews also closed the Moomat Ahiko Way on-ramp to Pacific Coast Highway, using the space as a staging area for crane operations and construction equipment. The temporary closure is part of the planned traffic impacts associated with the bridge truss installation and overnight work.
The temporary pedestrian bridge is a key component of the larger $35 million Pier Bridge Replacement Project, which will replace the aging bridge with a modern seismically upgraded structure designed for a 75-year service life. The project also includes wider pedestrian pathways, improved access, and infrastructure upgrades ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
Construction began in late 2025 and is expected to continue through 2027, with work phased to keep the pier open and accessible throughout the process.
Santa Monica Closeup continues to document the ongoing construction progress and major milestones shaping the future of the Santa Monica Pier.
