Week 5 — The Bench Finds Its Feet

This week felt like a major turning point in the build.

We cut the lap joints on both the leg frames and aprons, drilled and aligned the bolt holes, and finally got the main aprons assembled. The trickiest part was transferring and drilling matching holes through the leg frames so everything lined up accurately.

The apron holes were drilled in stages — starting with 3mm pilot holes, followed by 32mm countersunk holes for the bolt heads, and finally 10mm through holes for the bolts. The original plan called for 140mm bolts, but availability had other ideas, so we adapted and used 6" stainless steel bolts instead.

Working one person short and battling the humidity made every task feel harder than it should have, but we still managed to cover more ground than expected.

The biggest win came during the final dry fit.

The bench had a slight wobble through much of the assembly, but as the structure came together, the geometry locked into place and the wobble disappeared almost entirely.

A satisfying reminder that good joinery solves problems before fasteners ever do.

Next up: torsion supports, stretchers and the main hero of the build — the benchtop.

One step at a time. Built with care.
