GAMAGORI CITY GUIDE:

Gamagōri (蒲郡市, Gamagōri-shi) is a city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 October 2019, the city had an estimated population of 80,063 in 32,800 households, and a population density of 1,407 persons per km2. The total area of the city is 56.92 square kilometers (21.98 sq mi).

Gamagōri is situated on the coast of Mikawa Bay on the Pacific Ocean in southeastern Aichi Prefecture. Sheltered by Chita Peninsula and Atsumi Peninsula, the climate is mild, and parts of the city is within the borders of the Mikawa Wan Quasi-National Park.

After the start of the Meiji period, Gamagōri Village in Hoi District, Aichi Prefecture was proclaimed on October 1, 1889. Gamagōri was elevated to town status on October 6, 1891.

The area of the town expanded through annexation of the neighboring villages of Toyooka, Kaminogo and Shizusato on July 4, 1906.

The town escaped damage in World War II, but the 1945 Mikawa earthquake caused considerable damage to parts of Gamagōri.

The city of Gamagōri was proclaimed on April 1, 1954 when the town of Gamagōri merged with the neighboring town of Miya and village of Shiotsu.

The village of Otsuka joined Gamagōri on October 1, 1956, followed by Katahara on April 1, 1962 and Nishiura on April 1, 1963.

Gamagōri is a regional commercial center and fishing port, with a mixed economy of light manufacturing and agriculture. Gamagōri is also noted for its production of hothouse oranges. Companies headquartered in the city include: (1) Nidek Co., Ltd., optics (2) Japan Tissue Engineering Co., Ltd., bio-pharmaceticals (3) Takemoto Oil & Fat Co. Ltd., edible oils (4) Gamasa Food Co. Ltd., food processing (5) Nippon Tokushu Goukin Co.,Ltd., metal fittings and components.

TOYOKAWA CITY GUIDE:

Toyokawa (豊川市, Toyokawa-shi) is a city in the eastern part of Aichi Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 October 2019, the city had an estimated population of 183,930 in 72,949 households, and a population density of 1,141 persons per km2. The total area of the city is 161.14 square kilometers (62.22 sq mi). Toyokawa, famous for its Toyokawa Inari temple, is blessed with a good balance of industry, commerce, agriculture and forestry, and is situated in an area rich in history, traditions, and culture.

Toyokawa City was founded on June 1, 1943, by the merger of Toyokawa town with neighboring Ushikubo Town and Yawata Village, all from Hoi District.

In 1939 the massive Toyokawa Naval Arsenal was established, one of the largest producers of machine guns, aviation ordnance and ammunition in the Empire of Japan. It was also had sections that produced military-issue katana, bayonets, and glass lenses for use in cameras, binoculars, and similar equipment. During World War II, many thousands of civilians were conscripted or volunteered to work at the Arsenal, and towards the end of the war, included hundreds of middle school students and high school girls. On August 7, 1945, the Toyokawa Naval Arsenal was targeted by a flight of B-29 bombers. About 2,500 people were killed during the Toyokawa Air Raid.

Toyokawa was one of the last places to be targeted using conventional explosive and incendiary bombs in the closing days of World War II, occurring the day after Hiroshima was destroyed by an atomic bomb.

After the war, on April 12, 1955, Toyokawa annexed Mikami village from Yana District. This was followed by the neighboring town of Goyu from Hoi District on April 1, 1959. Toyokawa further expanded on February 1, 2006, by annexing Ichinomiya, On January 15, 2008, the towns of Otowa and Mito became part of Toyokawa, and finally on February 1, 2010, the town of Kozakai likewise was merged into Toyokawa City.

TOYOHASHI CITY GUIDE:

Toyohashi City is located in the southeastern corner of Aichi Prefecture, and is both the cultural and industrial center of the East Mikawa area.

Aichi is centrally located on the main Japanese island of Honshu, and was host to many of the great feudal warlords who shaped the history of Japan. In modern times, many great companies are headquartered in Aichi, including Toyota Motor Corporation, Nippon Sharyo (railway rolling stock manufacturer) and Noritake (tableware manufacturer).

As one of Japan's 'core cities', Toyohashi has everything you'd expect to find in a major city, but it maintains a friendliness, as well as a love of Japanese tradition, that bigger cities often forget.

Toyohashi has a mild climate, a low cost of living and is within easy reach of Nagoya, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe by Shinkansen bullet train.
