Diane Goodstein
South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein's beachfront home was completely destroyed by fire on October 4, 2025, in an incident now under investigation by state authorities. The massive blaze erupted around 11:30 AM at her four-bedroom residence located at 18 Planters Retreat on Edisto Beach, forcing three family members to evacuate by jumping from the burning structure. Judge Goodstein, 69, was walking on the beach with her dogs when the fire started. Her husband, former state senator Arnold Goodstein, 81, sustained multiple fractures after leaping from the first floor to safety and was airlifted to Medical University of South Carolina for treatment. Two other family members were rescued by emergency responders using kayaks from the marshy terrain behind the property. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident, with sources revealing that Judge Goodstein had been receiving death threats for weeks prior to the fire. The judge gained national attention in September 2025 when she issued a temporary restraining order blocking the state from releasing voter registration data of 3.3 million South Carolinians to President Trump's Department of Justice, a decision that was later overturned by the state Supreme Court on September 11.
