The psychology of people who heal after betrayal. #Shorts
If you've been betrayed and don't know where to go from here, start here.
Step 1: Name it.
"I was betrayed."
"It was not my fault."
"I am still here."
Step 2: Find one person who can hold it.
A therapist.
A trusted friend.
Someone who doesn't need you to be over it yet.
Step 3: Come back to your body.
Where am I tight?
What happens to my breath?
Your body has been carrying this. It needs you to return.
Healing is not about becoming who you were before.
That person is gone.
Maybe who you're becoming:
Knows their own strength
Can rebuild trust without shame
Was betrayed but not destroyed
You are not broken.
You are allowed to heal.
And you are not alone.
👇 Comment "HEALING" if you're taking the first step today.

The Foundational Theory: Freyd, J. J. (1996). Betrayal trauma: The logic of forgetting childhood abuse. Harvard University Press.
This seminal work introduces Betrayal Trauma Theory, explaining why betrayal by a trusted other is uniquely damaging and can lead to profound adaptations in memory and awareness.
The Multi-Dimensional Impact: Hollenbeck, C. M., & Steffens, B. (2024). Betrayal trauma anger: Clinical implications for therapeutic treatment based on the sexually betrayed partner's experience related to anger after intimate betrayal. Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, 50(4), 456–467.
This recent study provides stark data on the impact of intimate betrayal, finding that betrayed partners are profoundly affected physiologically, psychologically, behaviorally, and spiritually, with high rates of self-blame and emotional dysregulation.
The Link to Shame and Emotional Dysregulation: Mojallal, M., Simons, R. M., Simons, J. S., & Swaminath, S. (2024). Betrayal trauma, mindfulness, and emotional dysregulation: Associations with moral injury and posttraumatic stress disorder. Traumatology. Advance online publication.
This research empirically connects betrayal trauma to difficulties in regulating emotions and feelings of shame, key components of the long-term distress described in this video.
Long-Term Effects on Self and Relationships: Yalch, M. M., & Robbins, A. L. (2025). Betrayal trauma and personality pathology: An integrated review. Journal of Trauma & Dissociation, 26(2), 159–177.
This comprehensive review synthesizes research on how betrayal trauma can shape personality and relational patterns, offering insight into the long-term challenges survivors face in rebuilding trust and identity.
