With the battery industry facing an unprecedented boom in demand due to the EV revolution, it's no wonder that Japanese giant Toshiba has started to jump into action.
 
However, their cell might be the most unique one yet since it is not explicitly targeted towards electric cars.
 
Nonetheless, the features of the cell and the experience of the company make it easily one of the most potentially game-changing products in recent history, so let's talk about that.
 
The SCiB Range
 
For those who don't know, SCiB is the marketing term that Toshiba uses for its range of high-performance cells.
 
And while traditionally they've mostly been used in pretty minor applications, including stuff like car starter batteries with 12 or 24 volts or batteries for 48-volt mild hybrids, for a few years these have gone on to be used in many places.
 
According to Toshiba, industrial equipment, storage systems, and other things, like traction power supplies, emergency power supply for trains, electric ferries, hybrid buses, trucks, hybrid electric vehicles, or even plug-in hybrids are the places that they design their cells for use in.
 
Another specific example listed in the release is public EVs, like electric buses or trams, which will be the focus of today.
 
However, the reason that these cells have never been that significant in the cell debate is that the two main types: High Power, and High Energy, have never been particularly good for the stuff that electric cars need.
 
That is high capacity and short charging times.
 
Instead, both of these tackled one of the two things, the High Power models for use cases that required quick charging and discharging and the High Energy being used only for storage applications.
 
And that's where the new 20 Ah cell comes in.  Because for the first time Toshiba has been able to develop an SCiB cell that provides both, high-end charging and discharging speeds and industry-standard energy density.
