Composing Myself: Gloria Coates

The twelfth in a series of composer videos from Wise Music Group.

Born in Wausau, Wisconsin, Gloria Coates began composing and experimenting with overtones and clusters from an early age, building her music on a framework of supreme structural clarity, across which she stretched finely woven meshes of glissandi and other microtonal effects. Her broad work, which includes 17 symphonies, 10 string quartets, chamber music and more, have earnt her a reputation as "the most obscure great composer of our time".
