Verona, Italy | City, Food and Christmas Market Tour

Welcome to a December Day Tour of Verona, Italy. Join me in my favorite city in Italy to enjoy the best City sights, places to eat and of course Verona's very own Christmas Market.

Verona is an ancient city that goes back to the Roman Republic. Astride the Adige River on 3 sides, it is definitely a walkable city, at least within the old town. The cluster of intertwining streets that crisscross each other at odd angles can easily get you lost. However, that is half the fun. Plus at any time you are 15 minutes walk to the river where you can easily reorient yourself.

Starting off your Verona tour you're gonna need a pick me up. What better than a cup of Italian coffee and a little bite. Start off at Nizza Café off Via Nizza, a highly related little street side covered café. Great coffee and the pastries are fantastic.

After your coffee wakes you up head across the east side of the river to explore the ancient roman theater and archeological museum. Here you find a massive amount of Roman history as well as some history of the Renaissance era as well. Afterwards, grab a funicular up to Castel San Pietro for the best views of the City.

Back in the city, just a few blocks into the city on the North side from Ponte Pietra is Santa Felicita Ristorante. An old 11th Century Church that has been renovated into a beautiful Pizzeria. Go in and enjoy a lovely pizza while taking in all the old church art.

To wash off the Pizza you got to grab some Gelato. I mean you're in Italy! Leaving Italy without getting some proper Gelato is a crime. My favorite place for Gelato is Vittoria 1938 Caffe. It's a lovely café on the West side of town right down the street from Ponte Della Vittoria bridge.

Hitting up the night time around Verona can be fun. It's a tourist city as well as a university city. The Via Giuseppe Mazzini is the high end shopping district of the city. With stores such as Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. Down that street is Piazza delle Erbe. An old historical square that hosts markets and has a massive amount of restaurants and bars that circle the square. During Christmas time it is decked out rather nicely with a huge Christmas tree.

When in Italy one of the best food experiences to enjoy is Apertivo. It's Italian Happy Hour basically. Where you go in, order a drink and then they usually bring you a little bit of food. Either for free or for a small seating fee. It's a good way to get the appetite going.

The main part of the Christmas Markets around Verona is in the Arena Square. Right next to the ancient, massive Amphitheater that is the heart of Verona. The 3rd largest Amphitheater in the World. It still hosts live shows and concerts. No gladiatorial fights though.

To end off the day I head back to the Northeast side of town for dinner at my absolute favorite restaurant in Verona, Osteria Sottoriva. It's a family run wine bar that serves up their own local wine and daily select menu. The menu is usually a small selection of local cuisine dishes including my favorite, Pastisada de Caval. Which is stewed horse meat and polenta.
