ATAGI reveals 12 cases of clotting related to the AstraZeneca vaccine

Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly says there have been 12 cases of blood clotting connected to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the last week.

Seven of these cases occurred in people aged between 50 and 59-years-old at a rate similar to that of those in the under-50s category.

Professor Kelly said the rates of blood clots for over-50s is behind the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation's (ATAGI) decision to lift the age recommendation for the AstraZeneca vaccine to 60-year-olds and over.

“The benefit of AstraZeneca in over 60s remains much higher than the risk of this particularly rare, but sometimes serious syndrome, and so people over 60 should still be rolling up to their GP or wherever they are getting their AstraZeneca vaccine,” he said.

Professor Kelly said those who had already received the first dose of AstraZeneca to get the second dose and not to mix COVID-19 vaccines.
