Making a PVC Vacuum Pump

My first attempt at a PVC Vacuum Pump - modelled largely off NightHawkInLight's version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkPLu6mgdWA

There's a few projects I want to try and make that first need a pump like this.

This was a bit of a success and a failure. It works and can both pump air and create a vacuum by sucking air. But it was only as I was putting this video together that I realised how inefficient my design was.
When the piston is fully compressed, my understanding is that the air left in the chamber has to be at the same pressure as what you've just pushed it to or sucked it from - so you want the smallest amount of space possible. As my two connections are on opposite ends of the pump, I have a massive volume of space.

Still, all part of the learning process!

I ended up having to make a few changes along the way. My initial design was meant to be a small hand held pump, but I couldn't get the pipe to fit with the piston rings. I ended up using:
- 500mm of 50mm pressure pipe
- 600mm of 32mm pressure pipe
- End caps (1x32mm, 2x50mm, 2x40mm)
- 32mm T connection
- 32mm screw connectors male/female
- 6mm vacuum hose connector x2 http://amzn.to/2E2hCqX
- 6mm vacuum hose http://amzn.to/2EtFJwz
- Rubber rings x4
- 1.5mm rubber sheet
- PVC glue
- Super glue

A vacuum gauge is also helpful to see how well it's working http://amzn.to/2FuR92v
I'm still learning, so if you have any comments or feedback for me, I would love to hear it. I try and do a project every week, so feel free to Subscribe if you'd like to see what I come up with next.
