Day Trip to Sun Moon Lake from Taipei by Train and Taxi

Sun Moon Lake scenic area is Taiwan's most famous tourist destination attracting lots of local weekend vacationers as well. The scenery is gorgeous and the aboriginal tribal culture fascinating.

You can visit Sun Moon Lake on a day trip from Taipei if that's where you'll be staying. Doing this on your own is definitely feasible if you spend enough time doing research before going. You'll leave Taipei around 7:30 AM by high-speed rail arriving in Taichung one hour later. From Taichung you can ride the tourist shuttle bus, which would take another 2 and a half hours to reach Sun Moon Lake. This would be the cheapest way of doing it for a total cost of 1010 (715+295) New Taiwan dollars, roughly 34 US dollars, excluding cruise fare and lunch.

To save time, you can also hire a taxi on arriving at Taichung Station, which would cut your travelling time by one hour one way. We don't know the cost of taxi and we don't need it because our tour groups are picked up by pre-arranged chartered bus at each location. You may check with the local tourism authorities to find out the taxi cost, however. You'll need to spend 4 hours there to make the day trip worthwhile. After your sightseeing in Sun Moon Lake is done, you'll retrace your route to go back to Taipei for the night.

Even though visiting Sun Moon Lake as a day trip can be done, it is HIGHLY recommended that you stay a night there.
