Veganism is trending at an all-time high and is one of the fastest-growing food industries. People choose to be vegan for a variety of reasons including health, environmental concerns, ethical & religious beliefs, and other motivations. One thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet that excludes all animal foods including meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, and for some, even honey.

Veganism is defined as a philosophy and a way of living that seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.

Individuals following a vegan diet are seeking treatment for eating disorders in increasing numbers. Eating disorder professionals are confronted with the challenge of deciphering what veganism means to an individual client and assessing how to treat without enabling the eating disorder. How can we provide the best care for vegan clients suffering from eating disorders without turning them away from getting the treatment they need? This presentation will take a fresh, thought-provoking look at veganism, debunk myths, and will lay out tools to better assess the true role veganism plays in an individual’s life. Whether veganism exists alongside or is enmeshed within an eating disorder, we discuss how to walk this path with clients effectively and ethically toward full recovery.
