Lightning leaves a glass tube in the sand

You know what happens when lightning strikes sand?

It heats it to almost 1800°C — the silica in the sand melts and hardens around the lightning's channel. It forms a hollow glass tube that maps every branch of the bolt. These are called fulgurites.

They can range from a few centimetres to several metres long. After a storm, one could be right under your feet on a beach.
