Instrumentals: Single File vs Multitracks vs Stems?
Single file vs multi tracks vs stems? What’s right for your next project?
Single File: Means you're giving me one stereo file. It’s just a single MP3 or WAV (the difference between these two files is the audio resolution, WAV being higher).
I have little control over the instrumental because it's one file. Your instrumental has no opportunity to improve. This is the definition of making a mixtape.
Multitracks: Every single instrument in the song is seperated and each instrument is its own file. I have control now over every aspect of the song. This way I can make every instrument perfectly complement your voice and give you album quality work.
Stems: is a group of the same instruments bussed together, so all the drums are one bus, another bus is made up of multiple guitars, another made up of multiple synths etc…
The reason to have stems vs multitracks is if the producer is totally happy with their effect choices. This gives me more control over the mix than just a single stereo file but less control than having the multitracks.
What’s right for you, will depend on your budget and vision, but I’m totally happy to take a phone call and talk you through your options!
