Andhra University, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, has completed its centenary journey, marking 100 years of academic excellence. The grand centenary celebrations were held with great splendour along the coast of Visakhapatnam, bringing together dignitaries, alumni, students, and well-wishers from across the country. The establishment of Andhra University was not merely the creation of an educational institution, but a powerful movement rooted in Telugu pride and aspiration for academic self-reliance. Beginning with resolutions passed in the Andhra Mahasabhas in 1913, the long struggle for a separate university for Telugu-speaking people was shaped by visionary leaders like Sir C.R. Reddy (Kattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy) and other intellectuals. Their relentless efforts led to the founding of the university on 26 April 1926. Later, great personalities like Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who served as Vice-Chancellor, elevated the institution to international prominence. The university was built on the mission of bringing quality higher education to the common man. Over the decades, Andhra University has produced countless distinguished alumni who have made their mark across diverse fields. Prominent figures include former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, legendary actor N.T. Rama Rao, filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas, Nobel laureate C.V. Raman, mathematician C.R. Rao, and industrialist G.M. Rao, among many others. Their achievements have significantly enhanced the global reputation of the institution. The centenary celebrations were graced by the Vice President of India C.P. Radhakrishnan as the chief guest, along with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Union Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, Nara Lokesh, and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who added special significance to the event. Thousands of students and alumni gathered, turning the campus into a vibrant celebration of legacy and pride. During the event, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced a major development initiative for the university, including a ₹500 crore grant aimed at transforming Andhra University into a world-class institution ranked among the top 100 universities globally. The funds will be used for infrastructure development, modernization of laboratories, and strengthening research capabilities. Andhra University is also emerging as a hub of innovation, collaborating with defence forces for advanced research in Defence Studies and making progress in fields like Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Technology, and pharmaceuticals. It is actively supporting startups, marine research, and innovation-driven projects, positioning itself as a leading innovation ecosystem. As the university steps into its next century, there is a shared vision among leaders and academics to further elevate its global stature and continue its legacy of excellence, innovation, and social impact.
