Disney's Lion King Animators Drew From Live Lions Brought Into Their Office

For Disney's The Lion King (1994), the character animators had never seen a real lion up close. So wildlife host Jim Fowler — the face of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom — drove live lions and other savannah animals into the Burbank animation studios on several occasions, so the artists could draw from life. The iconic Mufasa face you remember from childhood was studied from real lions standing 6 feet away in a fluorescent-lit office bullpen. Disney did the same for the deer in Bambi 50 years earlier.
