31 astonishing rainy days - diary (1 - 31 January 2021 in Namibia)

Rainfall in Namibia is normally limited to the summer months of October to March, sometimes extending into April and early May. Even a few drops of rain will bring out the colors of nature, displaying even more intensely the vivid red sands of the Namib or Kalahari desert, or the green vegetation.
Namibians are a funny lot. When it starts to rain they get a strange look in their eyes, jump into their vehicles and start driving around. The more torrential the downpour, the more active they become. They want to see the rivers flow, the dams fill and experience the rarity of rain firsthand. Apart from perennial rivers on the southern and northern borders, Namibia’s rivers are ephemeral, flowing only during good rain years for a few hours or days at most. And when they flow, people gather to watch them.
Each year is different. This season the heaviest rains fell in January (2021) throughout the country. Rivers appeared everywhere. People were uploading videos every day and checked their gauges and entered the figures into their Rainfall Book. They asked their neighbors: “How much rain did you get?” It’s a friendly competition, but you can bet the guy with the most rain feels smug.
Here you can find out how you can to experience an adventure on different of Namibia's rivers in the rainy season and the landscapes come back to life with the first drops of rain. The different shades of green make up for vivid and contrasting scenery!
