Ancient Winemaking at Alaverdi Monastery in Eastern Georgia

This is the full-length version of the USAID visit to this 6th Century Monastery Winery.in the Kakheti Region of Georgia. Here Archibishop Davit Alaverdeli and his disciples practice the techniques of natural fermentation in buried clay vessels called qvevris and preserve the ~500 indigenous grape varieties indigenous to the region. In 2006, the Russians closed the border and banned Georgian imports, destabilizing the region. Today the U.S. State Dept. supports their economic prosperity by working to promote exports and wine tourism in the cradle of ancient winemaking.
