Here are my top five non-minor pentatonic scales to use in the blues.
1. The MixoDorian scale.
Typically, the Mixolydian mode and the minor pentatonic will be the more popular choices to use over the dominant chords in a blues progression. The MixoDorian scale consists in adding the major third to a Dorian scale to get that bluesy sound of the minor and major thirds combined.
2. The Lydian Dominant mode.
This scale uses the sharp four that is the same as the flat five. This flat five is what we know as the blue note on the blues scale.
3. The Whole Tone scale.
This scale can sound really tense, but you can use it sparingly to get some interesting textures.
4. The Whole Tone/Half Tone Diminished scale and
5. The Half Tone/Whole Tone Diminished scale.
Combine these with the most usual pentatonic and Mixolydian sounds for some outside feeling.
