Despite his smaller size (5'5​1⁄2" vs Margarito's 5'11") and lower weight (148 lbs vs. Margarito's 165 lbs) Pacquiao hammered Margarito with his superior speed and technique. The fight went the distance with Pacquiao winning via unanimous decision over Margarito. Pacquiao almost knocked out Margarito in the 4th round with a left hook to the body and in the 6th round Margarito connected a solid left hook to the body that sent Pacquiao into the ropes, which was the closest Margarito came to pressing Pacquiao. Judges' scores were Juergen Langos 120–108, Glen Rick Crocker 118–110, and Oren Shellenberger 119–109 for Pacquiao. Pacquiao landed 474 out of 1069 punches (44%) while Margarito landed 229 out of 817 (28%). Out of those punches Pacquiao landed 411/713 power punches thrown (58%) while Margarito landed 135 out of 312 (43%).

He was named "Fighter of the Decade" for the 2000s by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), World Boxing Council (WBC), and World Boxing Organization (WBO). He is also a three-time Ring magazine and BWAA Fighter of the Year, winning the award in 2006, 2008 and 2009, as well as the winner of the Best Fighter ESPY Award in 2009 and 2011.[10] In 2016, Pacquiao was ranked No. 2 on ESPN's list of top pound for pound boxers of the past 25 years[11] and currently ranks No. 4 in BoxRec's ranking of the greatest pound for pound boxers of all time.[12] World-renowned boxing expert and historian Bert Sugar ranked Pacquiao as the greatest southpaw fighter of all time.[13]

Beyond boxing, Pacquiao has participated in basketball, business, TV hosting, acting, music recording and politics. In May 2010, Pacquiao was elected to the House of Representatives in the 15th Congress of the Philippines, representing the province of Sarangani. He was re-elected in 2013 to the 16th Congress of the Philippines.[16] In June 2016, Pacquiao was elected as a senator and will serve a six-year term until 2022.[17]
