[자우림이 전하는 곡 배경]
FADE AWAY 와 함께 앨범의 시작을 만든 곡입니다.

영원히 사랑할 거라는 약속으로만 위로되는 외로움이 영원한 사랑을 만난 사람의 이야기를 듣는 외로움으로 이어지는 셈입니다.

이 노래는 사랑 이야기이고 저주 이야기이면서 질투 이야기이고 그래서 핵심을 이야기하는, 앨범의 중심이 되는 곡입니다.

주제 면에도 그렇고 사운드나 형식에서도 그렇습니다.

9집 Good-bye, grief 앨범을 만들 때부터는 매 앨범 비슷한 생각을 합니다.

다시 새 앨범을 만들 수 있을지 아닐지
누군가 아프거나 세상을 떠나지 않을지
우리 음악을 누군가 계속 들을지 아닐지 아무도 알 수 없으니까
작업 과정에서 너무 양보하거나 관례에 얽매이지 말아야지, 하는 생각입니다.

특히 이 노래 영원한 사랑은 데모를 만들 때부터 머릿속에 있었던 사운드를 그대로 구현하고 싶었습니다.

이 사운드가 아니었다면 노래의 의미가 완전히 다르게 들렸을 것이고 앨범 전체가 다른 흐름을 만들었을 것입니다.

사운드를 구상하면서 이 곡의 보컬을 받아낼 수 있는 것은 섬세하고 아름답게 미화된 소리를 구현하는 컨덴서 마이크가 아니라 강한 소리의 압력을 툭툭 받아낼 수 있는 다이내믹 마이크라고 생각했습니다.

그리고 그게 정답이었습니다.
제 소리를 더 실제 소리와 가창 느낌에 가깝게 수음할 수 있었고 여태까지 제 가창에서 종종 스스로 느껴왔던 미묘한 위화감 – 실제 가창에는 없는 몇 스푼의 가식적인 느낌 - 이 사라져 스스로 편안했습니다.

마이크를 바꾸면서 보컬 녹음시 모니터링도 스피커 방식을 선택해서 헤드폰을 벗고 스피커와 인이어 모니터를 동시에 사용해서 작업했습니다. 헤드폰만으로 가창을 모니터링하는 데에는 많은 한계가 있기 때문에 앞으로도 지금의 방법대로 녹음을 진행하게 될 것 같습니다.

마이크에 대해서는 지금까지 앨범들에서는 주로 빈티지 Neumann U87 U47 M149, Microtech Gefell CMV563과 빈티지 Telefunken 251 등을 사용했습니다.

이번에는 Electron-Voice 의 RE20을 메인으로 FADE AWAY 와 STAY WITH ME, 죽음이 우리를 갈라놓을 때까지 세 곡만 U-47로 진행했습니다.

This is the other song that starts the album off, along with FADE AWAY.

It's about a loneliness that is comforted merely by the promise of love forever, but which then leads to loneliness upon hearing from a person who has actually encountered eternal love. It’s thus a story of love, a curse, and jealousy; that’s what makes it the central song of the album and the one that speaks to the core of what the album is. It’s the central song in terms of theme, sound, and form as well.

Ever since our 9th album (‘Good-bye, grief’) in 2013 there are some recurring thoughts that accompany me every time we put out a new album:
Will we be able to put together a new album after this?
Will one of us perhaps get sick and pass away before we can?
Will people still listen to our music when we put one out?

Nobody knows the answer to these questions, and they make me think that we shouldn’t compromise or get caught up in conventions when putting an album together.

LOVE FOREVER in particular is a song that I wanted to render in the same way I heard it in my head, ever since it was just a demo.

Without this sound, the meaning of the song would have sounded completely different, and the flow of the entire album would have been altered as well.

While planning out its sound, I decided against a condenser microphone (which are good for capturing sounds of the delicate and beautiful variety) in lieu of a dynamic microphone which excels at withstanding the pressure of strong vocals…

And that turned out to be the right answer. It was able to pick up sounds of mine that were closer to the real sound and feel of singing, and the subtle sense of disharmony that I have often felt in my singing thus far (the feel of a small dash of fakeness not found in actual singing) vanished and I felt comfortable with myself. While recording the vocals with the different microphone, I also opted to use a speaker for monitoring which let me take off the headphones and instead use the speaker and in-ear monitor at the same time to do it. Considering the numerous limitations to monitoring when one uses headphones alone, I imagine that I'll keep recording using this method in the future as well.

The mics I’ve tended to use on our albums up to now include:
Vintage Neumann U87 U47 M149 mics,
a Microtech Gefell CMV563,
and a vintage Telefunken 251.
For this album the main mic was an Electron-Voice RE20, while only FADE AWAY, STAY WITH ME, and TILL DEATH DO US PART used the U47.
