Chinese Radish Cake Recipe | Turnip Cake Recipe | Lo Bak Go Dim Sum

Chinese Radish Cake or Lo Bak Go, as it’s known in Cantonese, is a popular Dim Sum dish. In the West, it is often called Turnip cake. This is my super easy recipe for making this savoury treat in the comfort of your own home.

2. Dried shrimp
3. Chinese sausage
4. Shiitake mushrooms
5. Rice flour
6. Spring Onion/scallion
7. Cornstarch
8. Salt & White pepper
9. Sugar

Dipping Sauce
- Oyster sauce

- Hoisin sauce
- Worcheshire sauce

Radish Cake is a traditional dish often served at Dim Sum houses but it is also made at home and eaten during Chinese New Year's Day when it is thought to bring good fortune. In some parts of the world, it is frequently eaten for breakfast and, for me, I would never dream of going to dim sum without ordering this delicious, savoury dish.

In the West, Lo Bak Go is often translated as "Turnip Cake" but this is misleading as the Chinese Radish is very different to the Western turnip. The correct translation would be "Radish Cake" and the Chinese radish is also known by various other names such as Daikon and Mooli. In Singapore, this dish is called carrot cake! Fortunately, they are widely available not only in Asian supermarkets but also from the major supermarket chains.

Much of the savoury flavour comes from the filling. I'll be using a Chinese Sausage and dried shrimp but, if you want to omit these ingredients and transform it into a vegetarian dish, you can. I would replace those filling ingredients with red chilli and garlic.

Indeed, most restaurants tend to skimp on the filling ingredients because they are comparatively more expensive than radish, rice flour and starch. So in many ways, the homemade dish will be superior to the restaurant version!

Having said that, don't overload the radish cake with filling because it affects the texture. More filling will make the cake less smooth so it is a careful balancing act.

The most important part of cooking this dish is getting the correct ratio between radish and rice flour and I will go into that in the video. Once you have decided which ratio works for you though, the dish is pretty easy to make. Although this radish cake is steamed and pan-fried, it is more like baking than cooking and most of the work is in the preparation. Once it is made, you can keep it in the fridge and have it for breakfast, lunch and as a starter for dinner.
