New Genoa bridge opened two years after tragic collapse

Italy officially opened the new Genoa bridge on Monday, two years after the deadly collapse that killed 43 people and shocked the country.

The new kilometre-long bridge, designed by star architect Renzo Piano, replaces the old span that broke apart in the city on Aug. 14, 2018 in one of Italy's worst civil disasters in decades.

Wearing masks, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci cut a ribbon to mark the beginning of the new Genova-San Giorgio viaduct.

The Italian Air Force's Frecce Tricolori, or Tricolour Arrows, flew in formation over the bridge to honour the victims, filling the grey skies over the port city with the colours of the Italian flag - red, white and green.
