Fire and Burn Prevention Month CY 2023 (PART 1): 7 Basic Fire Prevention Tips for Police Officers

DID YOU KNOW that President FERDINAND E MARCOS, proclaimed the year 1967 and every year thereafter, as SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION YEAR, each month of the year to be devoted to a particular aspect of safety and accident prevention in various fields. The Month of March is proclaimed as Fire Prevention Month

DID YOU KNOW that President CORAZON C. AQUINO, declared the month of March of every year as “Burn Prevention Month” under the auspices of the Philippine Society for Burn Injuries, Inc.. The need to disseminate knowledge in the field of burn prevention and to enhance education in all phases of burn care is of utmost importance

As a police officer, it's important to be aware of basic fire prevention tips to ensure your own safety as well as the safety of those around you. Here are 7 basic fire prevention tips for police officers:

1. Keep flammable materials away from heat sources:
This includes items like gasoline, lighter fluid, and other combustible materials. Make sure they are stored in a cool, dry place away from any heat sources.

2. Don't smoke… if a smoker, smoke only areas where flammable materials are present:
Smoking is bad for the health of police officers
Smoking should only be done in designated smoking areas
Make sure you properly dispose of your cigarette butts
Philippine Laws also prohibit smoking in government offices and facilities

3. Practice safe cooking techniques:
If you are cooking while on duty, make sure to use the appropriate equipment and never leave the stove unattended
Ensure to only cook at designated cooking areas (kitchen)
Avoid using cooking equipment at workplace

4. Keep appliances and electrical cords in good condition:
Damaged cords can cause electrical fires, so make sure to inspect them regularly and replace any that are frayed or damaged
Establish a checklist and do it regular maintenance of appliances

5. Follow building safety procedures:
Be familiar with the safety procedures for the buildings you work in, including evacuation routes and fire alarms
Establish protocols and conduct drills at regular intervals

6. Use caution when handling firearms:
Keep firearms unloaded and stored in a secure location when not in use
Never handle firearms near flammable materials
Ensure fire retardant materials and containment

7. Keep fire extinguishers nearby:
Make sure you know where the fire extinguishers are located in your workplace and how to use them
Train people how to use a fire extinguishers and conduct drills
Remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep

By following these basic fire prevention tips, you can help prevent fires from starting and ensure that everyone stays safe
Prevention is better than cure… meaning burns will not happen if there is no fire
