Smartscooter May Change How People Travel in Mega Cities

Gogoro wants to change the way people in mega cities around the world get from one place to the other and judging by the amount of money it’s raised, it may succeed. This week, Gogoro debuted the Smartscooter and Gogoro Energy Network at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the company’s CEO Horace Luke says, ‘the number of these megacities will go from 28 to 41 by 2030 and we see this as both an opportunity and also an absolute need to improve pollution problems.’ Gogoro’s Smartscooter is made of an aluminum frame and can go from 0-30mph in under four seconds and can travel up to 60 miles on one battery charge. Gogoro partnered with Panasonic to develop the battery technology. Batteries for the scooter can be easily taken out and replaced at charging stations, the Gogoro Energy Network, that will be setup around the city that is eventually chosen to pilot the scooters and the network. Gogoro raised $50 million in its Series A round of funding to develop everything from the scooter to the technology platform behind the energy network. Luke says the company is close to completing a $100 million round of Series B funding which will be used to market and pilot the scooter in a megacity. TheStreet’s Ruben Ramirez has details from Las Vegas.
