Corn has always been part of the heritage of the tribes in Oklahoma—the Ponca Tribe and Pawnee Nation. As they were forced from their land only 50 kernels of Eagle corn were kept since their exile to Oklahoma in 1870. The fields were sown by women who would walk up to 8 miles in one direction with buffalo shoulder hoes. Then they would depart in June on the summer buffalo hunt. The corn was left to mature until the September harvest. These were stored in underground cashes for the coming year.
