Dreams of Demons

I assembled this piece in 1969 for an electronic music contest sponsored by High Fidelity Magazine. When the winners were announced in July of 1970, Dreams of Demons had taken first prize.

In case you don't remember as far back as 1970, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young released "Deja Vu," Randy Newman had a new LP, and Ike and Tina Turner were still performing together.

Electronic music synthesizers such as the Moog and Buchla machines existed at the time, but were financially out of my reach. I used a homemade oscillator as my pitch source, and two inexpensive tape recorders to create and assemble the piece.

The music is best described as tape music. The character of the sounds is the result of manipulation of the signal during recording, and the musical structure is the result of many hours of editing with a razor blade and splicing tape.

I added the video recently, starting with an iTunes visualizer called Trapcode Klangfarbe and transforming it using filters in Final Cut.
