Public lecture on Narrative and Historical Theory | Nathan Greenfield
How did post-Soviet science fiction predict Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine? What changes have occurred in the teaching of Russian and Ukrainian literature since Ukraine gained its independence? And what is the relationship between narrative theory and historical theory?
Nathan Greenfield, a famous historian and North American correspondent at the University World News, sought answers to these questions in his research. On February 28, he will give an open lecture to discuss the connection between narrative theory and historical theory, using examples from The Odyssey, Hamlet, Star Trek, and even Harry Potter, as well as Ukrainian films such as Mykyta the Fox and The Grey Bees.
The historian argues that a full understanding of narrative theory involves seeing its connections to historical theory. After all, history, while not fictional, is ultimately told as a narrative supported by relevant documents.
Dr. Greenfield will review theories of narrative, including medieval allegory, Immanuel Kant's theory of beauty, and Karl Marx's materialist historical view of narrative. The lecture will conclude with a discussion of postcolonial theory and its application to understanding Ukrainian history.
Moderator: Anton Liagusha, PhD in History, Specialist in Public History, Dean of Social and Humanities, KSE University.
